There are certain issues that have been raised that need to be dealt with in finality before starting the league. This notice is meant address those concerns.

  • League Format
  • Relegation and promotion system will be implemented. Only 1 team will be per division will be relegated and 1 promoted (save premier).
  • The men’s division below premier will be entered into 3 pools in the 1st round and the results of the 1st round will be used to determine the 3 lower divisions. The top 2 teams in each division will automatically enter Division 1. The rest of the division will be made up of the best placed finishers in the rest of the division. All other divisions will be formed similarly – no playoff games will be played as previously communicated. Please have a look at league structure in the ‘GBL Teams’ tab in the attached fixture list for full clarification

  • Calendars
    • Every effort has been made to accommodate university calendars
    • GBA and BSA calendars will be accommodated as and when they are made available to us.
    • Please take note of league rules and regulations when applying for a change in fixtures

  • Entrance Fees
    • An entrance fee may be charged for some match days. No amount has been finalised with regard to this and this may simply depend on the day itself. The figure of R65 that has been mentioned would be regard to a season registration (essentially a season ticket) which would therefore gain you entrance to all 380 games to be played this season – please note that this figure has itself not been yet been confirmed will be done shortly.

  • Team Roster Regulation
    • A maximum of 15 players can be registered for a team. This will not change. Our belief is that 15 players are more than enough for teams to run their seasons with.
    • Reasons such as students possibly partying are not legitimate reasons for not being able to play. In fact it is teams like this that we would rather not have representing the GBL product.
    • There has also been some talk of injuries but 15 well chosen players should be enough for a team to withstand an 18 game season.
    • Also limiting rosters to 15 allows players on the end of those rosters to find teams or divisions where they can actually compete thereby making the league bigger and possibly stronger.
    • With due respect the NBA has an 82 game season with a 15 player maximum.

  • Club Based Player Movement
    • Unfortunately movement of players from ‘2nd teams’ to ‘1st teams’ and vice versa or similar will be treated as player movement from one club to a completely different one and as such will be subjected to player movement regulations as per league rules.
    • The reasoning for the above is simply that all teams in GBL are in fact in competition with each other regardless of whether or not they are from the same club. All teams have the opportunity be relegated and promoted and as such allowing teams to manipulate more than 1 team cannot be tolerated by the league. It could end up that 1 club has more than 1 team playing in the same division and allowing completely free movement within a club would not work under those circumstances.

I hope this addresses some issues that have been raised about the season. If there are any others please communicate these to Manny Mabuza by email at manny@prosportconsulting.co.za
